Swiss top club FC Basel has a new owner. Former Basel-player David Degen took over 91.96% of the FC Basel Holding AG from previous owner Bernhard Burgener.
At the Annual General Meeting of FC Basel Holding AG on June 15, Bernhard Burgener, Peter von Büren and Karl Odermatt will step down from the board. A new board consisting of Johannes Barth, Reto Baumgartner, David Degen, Marco Gadola, Christian Gross, Sophie Herzog and Andreas Rey will stand for election.
In the coming weeks, Degen will sell a part of his shares. Among others, the board members Johannes Barth, Marco Gadola and Andreas Rey will take a stake in FC Basel Holding AG. Then, no shareholder alone will have a majority anymore.
Bernhard Burgener will, however, finish the current 2020/2021 season.
Before this out-of-court settlement between Degen and Burgener, a fierce dispute raged over the ownership of FC Basel Holding AG, according to the Swiss media. Media reports stated that Burgener was planning to sell the company to the British investment fund Centricus. Degen referred to a contractually anchored right of priority and declared himself the new owner after the transfer of about 15 million Euro, which Burgener did not accept. Degen and Burgener finally reached an out-of-court settlement before the case could go to court.
